Sintra is a UNESCO World Heritage Cultural Landscape 25 minutes from Lisbon by train. The town is set in a cloud forest in the Serra de Sintra, with palaces, quintas and moorish ruins hidden among pine and oak trees.
Start at Pena Palace when it opens at 9:30am — the colourful Romantic palace sits on a hilltop with views across the Sintra hills. Walk down through the palace park to Quinta da Regaleira, a neo-Gothic estate with underground tunnels, grottos and a mysterious Initiation Well.
Take the train to Cascais — a beautiful seaside town with beaches, a historic centre and excellent fish restaurants. Continue by bus to Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of continental Europe, with dramatic Atlantic cliff views.
Visit Monserrate Palace — a stunning Moorish-Gothic-Indian hybrid palace set in a botanical garden. Climb to the ruined Moorish Castle above Sintra town for panoramic views over the cloud forest and the coast beyond.
Buy tickets online to avoid queues. The Sintra Vila area has the best restaurants and accommodation. Hire a tuk-tuk for palace hopping — the hills are steep. Visit in spring or autumn to avoid the summer crowds.
