Why Madeira in 3 Days?

Madeira is a Portuguese island in the Atlantic, 1,000km southwest of Lisbon. It has a subtropical climate year-round, extraordinary volcanic landscapes, 1,400km of levada (irrigation channel) walking trails, and some of the best whale watching in the world.

Day 1: Funchal Old Town & Monte Cable Car

Start in Funchal Old Town — the Zona Velha neighbourhood has painted door art, fish restaurants and traditional bars. Visit Mercado dos Lavradores, the beautiful iron market. Take the cable car to Monte, visit the Monte Palace Tropical Garden, then ride the famous wicker toboggan back down to Funchal — a 200-year-old tradition.

Day 2: Levada Walk & Cabo Girão

Take a guided levada walk — the Levada do Caldeirão Verde is one of the most spectacular, passing through laurisilva forest and tunnels to a 100m waterfall. In the afternoon, drive to Cabo Girão — at 580m, it's one of the highest sea cliffs in the world, with a glass-bottomed skywalk over the Atlantic.

Day 3: Pico do Arieiro & Whale Watching

Start early with a transfer to Pico do Arieiro (1,818m) to walk above the clouds. In the afternoon, join a whale watching trip from Funchal marina — Madeira waters are home to sperm whales, pilot whales and multiple dolphin species year-round. Evening in Funchal Old Town.

Porto Moniz natural lava pools (free swimming). Fanal laurisilva forest (ancient trees in mist). Seixal black sand beach. Ponta de São Lourenço peninsula walk. Boca da Encumeada mountain pass viewpoint. Levada dos Balcões (easy, spectacular, 1 hour).
