Chiang Mai 3-Day Itinerary — Day by Day

Day 1: Temples & Old City — Doi Suthep, Wat Chedi Luang & Sunday Walking Street

Start the morning at Doi Suthep Temple, the golden hilltop temple that overlooks the entire city — take the songthaew shared taxi up the mountain (฿60 each way). Cover shoulders and knees or borrow a sarong at the entrance. Climb the 306 Naga steps to reach the gilded chedi. In the afternoon explore the Old City moat area: Wat Chedi Luang (home to a ruined 15th-century pagoda), Wat Phra Singh (the finest example of Lanna architecture in the city). End the day at the Sunday Walking Street on Wualai Road — one of the best night markets in Southeast Asia, open every Sunday 4pm to midnight.

Day 2: Ethical Elephant Sanctuary + Thai Cooking Class

Book a full-day ethical elephant sanctuary experience — look for sanctuaries where elephants roam freely and no riding is offered. The best sanctuaries are 1 hour from the city and include transport and lunch. In the evening, join a Thai cooking class — most include a market visit to Warorot Market where you learn to pick ingredients, followed by cooking 4–5 dishes including Khao Soi and green curry. You eat everything you cook.

Day 3: Doi Inthanon National Park — Thailand's Highest Peak

Take a day trip to Doi Inthanon National Park, 90km south of Chiang Mai. At 2,565m, this is the highest point in Thailand — cool mist, cloud forest and spectacular waterfalls. The twin Royal Pagodas (Naphamethanidon and Naphaphonphumisiri) are highlights. Allow a full day — most tours depart at 7am and return at 5pm. Entry fee: ฿300 (€8). Chiang Mai Budget Tips

Chiang Mai is one of the most affordable cities in Southeast Asia. A bowl of Khao Soi costs €1–2, a guesthouse from €10–15/night. The Grab app always beats tuk-tuks on price. Free temples include Wat Chedi Luang (entry to the courtyard), Wat Phra Singh and dozens more in the Old City. The Saturday and Sunday Walking Streets are free to walk through.

Chiang Mai Elephant Sanctuaries — What to Look For

Only book ethical sanctuaries. Red flags: elephant riding, shows, elephants chained or in small enclosures. Green flags: elephants roam freely in large forest areas, no riding, bathing is optional not forced, the sanctuary has less than 30 elephants.
