Strasbourg, Nuremberg, Vienna, Budapest, Prague — and one in downtown Chicago modelled on the German original. Real 2026 dates, what each market does best, and which ones stay open after Christmas Day.
A good Christmas market is a whole old town turned into one long evening — wooden stalls, mulled wine, food you only see in December. They cost nothing to walk into, and the best ones are a short flight or train ride from each other.
Pick your market below. Then let Triply AI build a day-by-day plan around your exact dates, budget and travel style.

Each of the six does something different best
Nuremberg is the template the rest copy — red-and-white stalls, strict rules on what's sold, and the Christkind opening it from the church balcony
Budapest and Prague give you the same atmosphere with cheaper hotels, food and drink than France, Germany or Austria
Nuremberg has a separate Children's Christmas Market on Hans-Sachs-Platz, with a carousel and a mini railway
Lebkuchen and bratwurst in Nuremberg, chimney cake and lángos in Budapest, bredele biscuits in Strasbourg
Can only get away after the 25th? Prague runs until 6 January and Budapest's Basilica market until 1 January
Chicago's Christkindlmarket brings the German format to Daley Plaza — no transatlantic flight needed
The Christkindelsmärik has been held since 1570, which makes it the oldest Christmas market in France. More than 300 wooden chalets spread from Place Broglie to the foot of the cathedral, so the market is less a single square and more the whole old town.
Entry is free. The city brands itself the Capital of Christmas, and it earns it: half-timbered streets strung with lights, a giant tree on Place Kléber, and Alsatian food that sits halfway between French and German — bredele biscuits, tarte flambée, hot white-wine vin chaud.
Published opening dates for 2026 differ by a day (25 or 26 November), so check the city's official site before you book. It closes on Christmas Eve. Strasbourg is under two hours from Paris by TGV, and easy to pair with Colmar's smaller markets.
Guided market walks, Alsace wine-route day trips and Colmar excursions
This is the market other markets are modelled on. Around 180 red-and-white striped stalls fill the Hauptmarkt, and what they may sell is tightly controlled — handmade decorations, gingerbread, prune-figure Zwetschgenmännle, no plastic tat.
It opens on Friday 27 November at 17:30, when the Christkind — a young woman in a gold crown — reads the prologue from the balcony of the Frauenkirche. After that it runs daily from 10am to 9pm, closing at 2pm on Christmas Eve.
Eat the local way: three small Nuremberg sausages in a roll (Drei im Weggla) and Lebkuchen, the city's protected gingerbread. Families should walk two minutes to the Children's Christmas Market on Hans-Sachs-Platz.
Old town walks, Lebkuchen tastings and day trips into Franconia
Vienna doesn't have one Christmas market, it has a dozen or more. The big one on Rathausplatz, in front of the neo-Gothic City Hall, opens earliest of the Western European classics — Friday 13 November — and runs to 26 December.
Rathausplatz is open daily 10am to 10pm (to 6:30pm on Christmas Eve). Once you've seen it, the smaller markets are where locals go: Spittelberg's narrow lanes, the Art Advent on Karlsplatz, and the markets in front of Schönbrunn and Belvedere palaces.
The drink here is Punsch, served in a collectible mug with a deposit. Because the season starts in mid-November, Vienna is the best pick if you want markets without December prices.

Get My Personalised RecommendationTwo big downtown markets a few minutes' walk apart, both opening on Friday 13 November, and the one in front of St Stephen's Basilica stays open until 1 January. Add Budapest's prices and it's the strongest value on this list.
At Advent Basilica a 3D light show is projected onto the church facade every half hour after dark. It runs 11am to 10pm Sunday to Thursday and to 11pm on Fridays and Saturdays. The Vörösmarty Square market is the older, more craft-focused of the two and runs to the New Year.
Eat chimney cake (kürtőskalács) straight off the coals and lángos, fried dough with sour cream and cheese. Then do what no other market city offers: warm up afterwards in an outdoor thermal bath. Our 3-day Budapest itinerary covers the rest.
Market tours, Danube evening cruises and Széchenyi bath entry
Prague's main market keeps going long after the German ones pack up: 28 November to 6 January, open on Christmas Day and New Year's Day too. If you can only travel between Christmas and New Year, this is the one.
The Old Town Square market runs daily 10am to 10pm, with the tree lit at 4:30pm on opening day, under the Gothic towers of Týn Church. A second market on Wenceslas Square is five minutes' walk away. Hours are shorter on 24 and 31 December.
Drink svařák (Czech mulled wine) or hot mead, and expect grilled sausages and Prague ham sold by weight — check the price per 100g before you order. Our 3-day Prague itinerary fits neatly around an evening at the market.
Old Town market walks, Vltava dinner cruises and castle tickets
The Christkindlmarket on Daley Plaza is a German-style open-air market in the middle of the Loop, inspired by Nuremberg's. 2026 is its 30th anniversary season, and it's the closest thing to the European original on the other side of the Atlantic.
It opens Friday 20 November and runs to Christmas Eve, free to enter: 11am to 8pm Sunday to Thursday, to 9pm on Fridays and Saturdays, with shorter hours on Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve.
Wooden stalls sell Glühwein, sausages, ornaments and handmade gifts, and the mulled wine comes in a souvenir mug that changes design every year. Weekends get long queues, so go on a weekday lunchtime if you can.
Holiday lights tours, architecture river cruises and city passes
Advent weekends sell out first in all six cities — midweek stays are cheaper and far easier to find.
