Start at Ljubljana Castle — take the funicular up for free, pay €13 entrance inside for panoramic views over the terracotta rooftops. Walk down through the cobblestoned old town to the iconic Triple Bridge and Dragon Bridge. Explore Prešeren Square, the Central Market along the Ljubljanica river and the café-lined riverfront. In the evening visit Metelkova City, Ljubljana's alternative arts district built into a former military barracks — best Thursday to Saturday evenings.
Take the bus to Lake Bled (45 minutes, €7 each way). Row a traditional wooden pletna boat to Bled Island and climb 99 steps to the Church of the Assumption. Hike up to Bled Castle for the best views of the lake and Julian Alps. Don't leave without trying Kremšnita — the iconic vanilla custard cream cake that originated in Bled. In the afternoon continue to Vintgar Gorge (€5 entry) for a dramatic 1.6km walk through a turquoise river canyon.
Take the bus or a day tour to Postojna Cave (1 hour from Ljubljana), one of the largest cave systems in the world. A 5km train and walking tour leads through 2-million-year-old stalactite halls. The resident cave-dwelling olm (human fish) is unmissable. Combine with nearby Predjama Castle — a medieval fortress built directly into a cliffside cave, one of the most dramatic castles in Europe (entry €24, combo ticket with Postojna €38).
Ljubljana is one of the most affordable capital cities in the EU. A beer costs €2–3, a sit-down dinner €10–16 per person. The castle funicular is free. The entire city centre is walkable and most highlights — Dragon Bridge, Triple Bridge, the riverside promenade — are completely free. Day trips to Lake Bled and Postojna are inexpensive by bus.
